Erectile Dysfunction Remedies

It wasn't very long ago that erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation issues were considered huge taboo subjects. Embarrassing and humiliating secrets held by millions of men. Terrible secrets kept hidden in bedrooms of frustrated men and their glum and dejected wives and lovers.

The topic has not been one that was easily or openly discussed. Too "sensitive." "High voltage!" Well, secret or not, ED was, and still is, a fairly common problem. So common that according to a study from the Journal of Sexual Medicine, one out of every four new ED patients is under 40 years old!

Many men have agonized and suffered in silence with the condition but thankfully attitudes are changing and It's becoming less and less of a taboo subject. More men are now coming out in droves and seeking help.

Now, most men experience periods when they are unable to get an erection. This could be due to stress, anxiety, having had too much to drink, or exhaustion. Treatment is seldom required as normal functioning usually resumes in short order.

Some men, however, have persistent and repeated bouts of  Impotence. This may occur at any age, but increases as one advances in age. Just to give you an idea: About 50% of men in the 40 to 70 year old age set experience ED. While approximately 70% of men over 70 years have ED.

What is Erectile Dysfunction?

An erection is a complex hydraulic event, the result of a complex interplay of endocrine, psychological, neural and vascular factors that work together to regulate and control the flow of blood into, and its subsequent containment within the male organ - leading to an increase in pressure and the development of rigidity (hardness).

To get an erection, the following conditions must ALL first be in place:

  • An appropriate stimulus of arousal from the brain as the whole process starts there and works its way downwards.
  • The nerves linking the brain and the penis should be functioning at optimal levels.
  • There should be sufficient supply of blood to the penis.
  • The blood vessels (veins) within the penis should be able to hold in the blood (within the penis).

When you're young, there's usually no cause for concern as your "systems" ( the nervous, endocrine and blood circulatory systems) are all in excellent condition. It's only when you grow older and your "systems" start to deteriorate that erectile dysfunction starts emerging and becoming an issue.

Causes of Erectile Dysfunction

The majority (80%) of long-term ED cases are caused by some sort of physical ailment. The list of these health conditions is long and includes:

  • Reduced blood flow to the penis: Due to narrowing of the blood vessels carrying blood to the genital area
  • Conditions affecting the nerves going to the penis: Parkinson's disease, stroke, and multiple sclerosis.
  • Hormonal issues: Declining levels of the primary male hormones (Testosterone, DHEA, and the Human growth hormone)
  • Diabetes: May cause damage to nerves and blood vessels
  • Side effect of certain medicines: Beta-blockers (such as atenolol and propranolol), antidepressants, and some diuretics.
  • Cycling: Sitting on the saddle for long periods damages the nerves going to the male organ

... the end result of one, some, or all of  the above is that sufficient amounts of blood are unable to surge into and remain in the penis.

The remaining (20%) cases of ED are caused by psychological factors that originate in the brain. They include, but are not limited to, stress, anxiety, relationship difficulties, depression, and loss of self-worth.

Treatment Options for ED

To successfully tackle ED, it's important to first establish whether the cause is physical  or psychological. This is done by first excluding the most likely physical causes. Once that is done, an appropriate treatment regimen can then be prescribed.

There are many treatment options available, both medical and non-medical. However, It's important to note that any treatment should be used in combination with adopting a healthy lifestyle.

Medications like Viagra have helped millions of men around the world, but they come with adverse side effects. Surgery is another option, but it is expensive and the recovery period is long.

Therapy, with a mental health professional or a registered sex therapist, is effective in cases of psychologically caused erectile dysfunction, but not in physical cases.
